Our School in the European Programme

“SOCRATES – Comenius 1”

In the school year 2002-2003, our school took part in the European Programme “SOCRATES - Comenius 1”. This Programme aims at the promotion of the European notion in Education and at bringing together students and teachers from countries that are or are about to become members of the European Union. It is a means of exchanging ideas and opinions through collaboration and mutual visits. The final aim is the comprehension of the European vision and its consummation.

The theme of our project is “Europe, land of fairy tales.” We are collaborating with two European schools: ASCHHEIM from Germany and JEDOVNICE from the Czech Republic. The german school and its headmaster, Mr. Ludwig Gutlein proposed the theme and have undertaken the coordination of our work.

“Fairy tales bear a touching witness of the past to the communication among peoples. The various types of fairy tales have known a universal diffusion since primeval ages and have become possession of all.”

           M.G. Meraklis, (Artistic Popular Speech)

The first stage of the project required that each school selected traditional fairy tales from its country, one fairy tale for every class. Afterwards, the selected fairy tales were studied by the children and illustrated with various means of artistic expression.

In the meantime, a kind fairy from Aschheim, Irmi was her name, sent us the german and czech fairy tales and conveyed our stories to the language of our friends. Back on our island, “good elves” and “kind fairies” did the translations into greek, while

“good-willed witches” and “good-hearted giants” (the teachers) set their hands to the presentation of our work.

That is how the “Fantastic Land of Fairy Tales” was created.

THE EXHIBITION

In April 2003, the exhibition of the illustrated fairy tales started its tour at the german school with great success. In May it was presented in our school and in June it was transferred to Jedovnice.

“Europe, land of fairy tales”, a show

On the last day of the Exhibition, we presented a lovely show with sketches based on fairy tales, songs and dances. That was during the visit of a group of teachers from Aschheim to Leros.
